Dear Politicians:
Dear Politicans:
We know you're not perfect so don't pretend to be. You're human beings just like all of us. Instead of putting a spin on your mistakes in an attempt to deflect them, do exactly the opposite: own them. Freely admit to them and tell us what you learned. It's how we all learn. You're no different. You'll find that you are nearly instantly elevated and respected by all of us, even those who disagree with you.
Those exceedingly rare moments when one of you owns your mistake are amongst the most surprising and refreshing. We so want to be able to respect you so give us the opportunity that, because you're human like us, comes at great frequency. Your opponents may think that it's an opportunity for them to pounce but that's not how we see it. We see you as more of the genuine article and them as the typical, untrustworthy hack.
The stress of wondering when the next gotcha question is going to come has got to be a terrible burden. So take the chance. Be honest. You will find that a great weight has been lifted from your shoulders and when we disagree, at least we will trust each other a little more and perhaps can find the common ground that often seems elusive but is there somewhere.
We know your job isn't easy. We want you to succeed at making the world just a little better than it was before you took office. So tell the truth and admit to your mistakes. We will cut you some slack and together we will spend our time on productive conversation instead of wasting it on pointless insults and arguments.
Yours Truly,
The Voters
